The National Education Policy 2020 has proposed the following changes in the country’s education system: 

1. Availability of at least one multi-disciplinary college in each district: By 2030, all district administrators have the responsibility to set up a multi-disciplinary institute in their district region. The enrollment capacity of these institutions needs to be up to 3,000 students. This proposal aims to promote higher education in every part of the country. 

2. Discontinuation of the M.Phil course: According to the NEP 2020, the enrollment in the M.Phil course will discontinue from the upcoming sessions. Further details about this change are yet to be announced. 

3. Promotion of vocational learning: According to this change, all students now have a choice to learn skill sets of their choice. For this, firstly, they need to finish their schooling, after which they can learn skills of their choice. 

4. Reducing the gap between arts and science streams: The NEP proposes merging the science field with the arts to promote multi-disciplinary education straight from the elementary level. This will promote the development of multi-disciplinary talent among children. 

5. Establishment of Academic Bank of Credit: According to the NEP, the Education Ministry will set up an Academic Bank of Credit. This institution will digitally store the academic credits earned by students during their academic careers. In addition to it, the four-year degree course will constitute a separate degree portion of ‘Degree with Research’. Students who will accomplish research in any field during their degree course will be eligible to get this degree. 6. Inclusion of internships at an early stage: Right now, our country is facing a significant shortage of skilled professionals. Hence, endorsement of skill-based education is the need of the hour. 7. Single test for all college entries: Until now, students have to appear for multiple exams to get entry into their preferred colleges. And National Testing Agency (NTA) will be responsible for conducting tests for different college entries. 

8. New system of schooling: Till now, our country’s school education system relied on a 10+2 pattern of education. However, with the NEPs proposed changes, now schools will have to follow a 5+3+3+4 pattern of education. As per this system, schools will provide foundation courses till the second standard. After this, students will enter a preparatory stage (third to the fifth standard). Then, the middle stage (sixth to the eighth standard). 

After completing the eighth standard, students will enter the secondary stage (ninth to twelfth standard). In the secondary stage, schools will have to offer multi-disciplinary courses to students enrolled in their institutions.
